The Model is a fully developed and research-based plan to provide parents the support and information they need to effectively engage in their children’s learning from birth and throughout their school years.
There is significant evidence that the most successful educational systems in the world have embraced the important role parents play in their children’s education. In some cases, these countries have created systems to support parent involvement. The U.S., on the other hand, has built a system that makes inadequate attempts to connect parents to their children’s schools and learning.
Recent parent surveys show that parents want to help their children succeed. However, many parents have an incomplete understanding of how school readiness is defined or what they can do to support learning at home. We believe that by bringing parents into the educational system in a meaningful way, we can reverse the steep decline in achievement in this country.
Our goal is to empower parents as a true partner in their child's learning.
We will educate parents about the impact school readiness has on school performance, future education and career opportunities, and other important life outcomes. We will provide parents with the resources and tools they need at every step along the way.
The Model provides a framework for educating and communicating with parents and monitoring a child's progress from birth and throughout their school years.
Our goal is to show that The Model can work and to convince state and national legislators that country-wide adoption and implementation is the best way to turn our failing education system around.
The research is clear, efforts to better engage parents at all levels of a child's development have consistently shown positive outcomes for students, parents, and teachers. By intentionally orchestrating our interactions with parents, we will create the conditions necessary to magnify our potential to become the best-educated and prepared society in the world.
Once The Model is fully developed, it is essential that our launch is carefully designed to motivate and empower parents, adequately support the individuals and institutions involved in the work, and inspire our nation to embrace this new way of building an effective and internationally competitive education system.
It is now within our reach to be able to share the common goal of helping all children reach their full potential. Our children must be able to count on us. We cannot afford to delay!
The development, implementation, and maintenance of The Model will require legislation and policies, partnerships, professional development, and an accountability and evaluation system.
For this reason, the Programs of Study Design Framework developed by the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Career, Technical and Adult Education (OCTAE) should serve to guide the development and establish this model.
