There is an abundance of research, over many decades now, that reveals the singular importance of a parent in a child’s education. The answer to improving education is right in front of us, yet little has been done to truly involve parents in the public education system.
We are now well behind nations that believe all children can and should perform equally well; these nations value and support a parent’s role in education. Now compounded with more than a year of COVID pandemic education challenges that have, by almost all measures, hit the U.S. the hardest, we have a lot of catching up to do. If we do not address this issue head-on, right now, our children will not gain the skills they need to be successful in life and our international achievement gap will continue to widen. We know that parents are the answer. Now we just need to tell them, support them, and empower them. ALL of them.
On the bright side, there are countless organizations, educators, and academics that know the importance of family and community engagement and have been implementing successful programs that make a real difference in communities across the country. The National Network of Partnership Schools (NNPS) is one organization that believes in the power of parents as much as we do. Learn more about the NNPS below.
We can look to the Equality of Educational Opportunity study, known as the Coleman Report from 1966, as proof that our country has been struggling with achieving educational equity for generations.
This landmark report showed that the variation in family background and education, not variation found in schools, primarily accounts for the achievement gap. The report is an amazing time capsule, though unfortunately, one that feels very current.
The National Network of Partnership Schools (NNPS), a program of Johns Hopkins University, has been working for years to connect schools and districts to share what works in family and community engagement. Dr. Joyce L. Epstein is the Founder and Director of NNPS and an internationally recognized leader in parent engagement.
Dr. Epstein is a connector. She and the staff of her organization work hard to make the best information and action ideas available to all their members to build capacity in their family engagement programs. A quote from Dr. Epstein from 1990 informs the main building blocks of our National Parent Education & Engagement Model:
"At all grade levels, parents need clear information about course requirements and objectives, standards for promotion and graduation, grading practices and test results, and school budget and policy decisions."
- Dr. Joyce Epstein, quoted in "Parents as Partners" by Lisa Jennings, Education Week 8/1/90
The NNPS provides members with information, research results, and ideas for action from the staff and members across the country.
Membership is very accessible and open to all schools, districts, and states.
This publication summarizes the family engagement programs from over 30 schools and 10 districts in the U.S., Ireland, and Scotland, from before and after the COVID shutdowns.
The fourth edition of this bestseller presents tools and guidelines to develop goal-linked programs of family and community engagement. It contains ready-to-use tools to strengthen your partnership programs and practices at all grade levels. Read more and order at Corwin Press or Amazon.
